Poon was born in Japan of Chinese parents. Her family moved to Hong Kong when she was very young. She found a wonderful teacher for her six-year-old daughter. Her name was May Hung. She was a graduate of the Royal Ballet School in London and at that time she was also a principal with the Hong Kong Ballet.
