Other observers — though not all — agree that virtual “live” events help build grass-roots interest in the arts, sending new patrons to theatrical productions as well as to movie chains. Still, dollar-wise, exactly how big is the HD trend? It’s hard to say. Other than the Met, few producers release box office figures. Fathom, the largest HD distributor (for broadcast information, see www.fathomevents.com), plays its numbers close to the vest. Still, it’s clear that the growth is significant. Fathom began with a handful of events 10 years ago: concerts by Tom Petty and Korn, broadcasting to 10 theaters. In 2010, it broadcast 74 events, typically to 500 or so theaters; in 2011, 104 events to about 600 at a time.

Both packages were eventually deemed harmless. The first package was discovered by a business at 11:55 a.m. The business reported receiving an unexpected and suspicious package, causing the evacuation of nearby buildings, Berkeley police spokeswoman Jennifer Coats said. The bomb squad determined the package to be harmless. Shattuck Avenue was shut down in both directions from Bancroft Way to Durant Avenue until about 4 p.m. The second package was reported Monday afternoon near Bancroft and Telegraph avenues, authorities said. It was searched and found empty, the university reported. During the investigation, multiple UC Berkeley buildings, including Sproul Hall and Martin Luther King Jr. Student Union, were evacuated.
